Local area focus: Wildflowers
of the Dorset Countryside
One of the great joys of life at Well Cottage is stepping out into a landscape that feels almost untouched by time. Wander just a few moments in any direction and you’ll find yourself surrounded by hedgerows and meadows alive with wildflowers. It’s a true feast for the senses.
From the whispering grasses along the quiet lanes of Bedchester to the lush field margins that border the Cranborne Chase, this area is a paradise for lovers of natural beauty. The palette changes weekly – delicate cow parsley, cheerful oxeye daisies, vivid poppies, and the unexpected bursts of purple knapweed or yellow toadflax create a patchwork of colour and scent that feels utterly magical.
Whether you’re an avid botanist or simply someone who finds peace in nature’s quiet artistry, you’ll adore the countryside that surrounds our cottage. These wildflower-strewn views are perfect for a peaceful ramble, a spontaneous photo opportunity, or a moment of stillness with a picnic and a good book.
We’ve put together a special gallery of recent snapshots taken just a short walk from Well Cottage and each image is a little window into the natural world that surrounds us here!

The Week in Dorset: Nature Towns Announced
Great news for nature lovers! Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole have just been named the UK’s very first official Nature Towns. This new title was awarded by Natural England and the National Trust, recognising all the brilliant work being done to protect green spaces and make them more accessible.
The area already has over 2,500 hectares of natural land, plus loads of play areas, community gardens and wildlife spots. New projects include restoring peatland, building nature trails and even using goats and cows to help manage the landscape.
It’s a lovely reminder that nature and town life can go hand in hand, and that Dorset is full of surprises at every turn!
Dorset’s hidden treasures: Discover
Lawrence of Arabia’s peaceful resting place
One of the most remarkable figures of the 20th century is quietly laid to rest in one of Dorset’s most picturesque villages: Moreton. This peaceful spot on the River Frome is the final resting place of T.E. Lawrence, better known to many as Lawrence of Arabia.
Famed for his daring exploits during the First World War, Lawrence became a legend through both his real-life role in the Arab Revolt and the sweeping, Oscar-winning epic Lawrence of Arabia (1962), where he was portrayed by Peter O’Toole. Adventurer, scholar, soldier, and reluctant hero, his life was as complex and captivating as the desert campaigns that made him famous.
Lawrence spent his final years in Dorset, retreating to a small cottage called Clouds Hill, not far from Moreton. He tragically died in a motorbike accident nearby in 1935, and was buried in the quiet annexe of St Nicholas Church, a simple yet moving site visited by admirers from around the world to this day.

But Moreton isn’t only for history enthusiasts. It’s one of Dorset’s most charming villages, perfect for riverside walks, cycling, wild swimming at Moreton Ford, or exploring the beautiful walled gardens and fascinating glasswork of St Nicholas Church. It even forms part of the Lawrence of Arabia Walking Trail.
Whether you’re captivated by the man, the myth, or the movie, this peaceful corner of Dorset offers a deeply memorable visit.
And yes, we can take you there as part of your English Cottage Vacation – it’s a mere 40 minute drive from Well Cottage through absolutely gorgeous countryside!

Did You Know..? Three world
wonders are right on your itinerary!
English Cottage Vacation guests are in for a truly world-class experience, quite literally! Our standard itinerary includes visits to three incredible UNESCO World Heritage Sites, each offering its own unique window into England’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
Stonehenge
Mysterious, ancient, and utterly iconic… Stonehenge is one of the world’s most recognisable prehistoric monuments. Believed to have been constructed over 4,500 years ago, this remarkable circle of standing stones has fascinated historians and travellers alike. Was it a temple? A celestial calendar? A burial ground? Even today, Stonehenge keeps its secrets.
The Roman City of Bath
Step into the elegant streets of Bath and you’ll walk in the footsteps of Romans, Georgians, and Jane Austen herself. Famous for its beautifully preserved Roman Baths and honey-coloured architecture, Bath is a city of classical beauty and historical intrigue. It’s also a perfect place to relax, shop, and soak up the timeless charm.
The Jurassic Coast
This dramatic stretch of coastline reveals 185 million years of geological history through its soaring cliffs, fossil-rich beaches, and spectacular sea views. It’s no wonder that the Jurassic Coast was the first natural site in the world to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001 – a fact we’re especially proud to share with our guests.
Each of these sites is included in our standard itinerary, with private chauffeured transport, expert guidance, and plenty of time to explore at your own pace.
