Hold Onto Your Handlebars! Here Are Our Favourite Cycling Routes!

With such incredible scenery in our local vicinity, there’s no better way to explore the Dorset countryside than by bicycle – that’s why we provide them for you here at English Cottage Vacation. So grab your appointed helmet, put your water and snacks in the basket attached to each bike and hold onto your handlebars – you’re in for a wonderful ride!

There’s a certain thrill that comes with the freedom to zoom through the nearby country lanes, maneuvering over the walkways and out into the open expanse with nothing but fields and fresh air surrounding you. So even if you’re not an avid cyclist, we recommend this one for everyone!

Guided by your own 2 wheels to take you anywhere, you’re spoilt for choice of which direction to take. There are so many breathtaking, scenic cycling routes in our local area so whether your destination is a quintessential English tea and cake shop, a proudly British pub with great ales and filling food, or a beautiful view point where you can share a picnic, our bicycles will get you there!

Shopping, Coffee Shops & Pubs

Make a day out of it! Enjoy a gentle 4 mile cycle south through our local lanes. This route will bring you to the large village of Child Okeford, which is overlooked by the prehistoric iron age fort of Hambledon Hill, which boasts marvelous far reaching country views and a gorgeous sunset. From here, you can continue on just a little further to pick up the north Dorset trail way.

Continue on in either direction to the market towns of Sturminster Newton which is just over 3 miles on the old railway line or in the other direction, Blandford Forum, which is slightly further at a little over 6 miles. Both market towns offer a wide range of fantastic amenities including shopping, coffee shops and pubs.

Shaftesbury & Gold Hill

This one is more of a hilly ride, so get your calf muscles at the ready and make sure you stay hydrated! When you leave Well Cottage, head north on the country lanes. The luscious, rolling hills will guide you on a safe path, staying off the main road, to the hilltop town of Shaftesbury. This local town is just 4 ½ miles from the cottage and when you arrive, you’ll find yourself at the foot of the famous Gold Hill, a steep cobbled street with the view looking down from the top of the street being described as “one of the most romantic sights in England”.

Hopefully this expectation will energise you to continue onwards and upwards, and after a short but steep climb, you have the reward of a lovely coffee shop or great pub to look forward to – accompanied of course, with none other than the beautiful views of the Dorset countryside extending out as far as the eye can see. And yes, you will be pleased to know that on the way home it is generally more downhill than up!

Coffee & Cake With Views

The Udder Farm shop makes for a fantastic destination to a wonderful bicycle ride through the British country lanes – with the reward of a strong coffee, scrumptious lunch or sweet treat when you arrive. This is for sure one of our guests’ favourite reasons to go for a bike ride with The Udder Farm Shop boasting a glorious, outdoor seating area with stunning views.

The cycled distance of 5 ½ miles will be just enough to work up an appetite and thirst! Again, this route is very safe as you will avoid all major roads until the last ¼ mile. Then, on the way home you can mix it up very slightly, exploring alternative paths, to experience other extraordinary views.
