Thomas Hardy's Cottage

Thomas Hardy’s birthplace and childhood home is situated close by in the Dorset countryside, the popular English author was born in 1840 in the cottage that his great-grandfather had built for the family and it is still in an original condition today, now protected and maintained by the National Trust.

Well Cottage is situated right in the heart of Thomas Hardy country, overlooking the rolling lush green hills, where he gained much of his inspiration from for his novels.
